Getting Started
Okay, there is a lot of information on
the website and I'm sure you are feeling a little overwhelmed.
Participating in the Soap Box Derby really is very easy.
1. Choose the car
type you want to race in. Check out
the car types here (Stock or Super Stock)
2. Purchase a car
- Soap Box derby cars can be purchased new from the
All American Soap Box Derby.
You might also be able to purchase a used car from past racers or
elsewhere. Cars made from about 2005 to date should have the
approved floorboard on them, you might have to purchase an updated
steering kit. The updated steering kits us two PVC type rings
on the steering cables.
3. Fill out the
registration form.
4. Send in your
payment of $60.00, registration form, racer birth certificate, photo
and short bio. The birth certificate does not have to be an
official certificate; a photo copy is fine. The photo and
short biography will be used in our race day program - please don't
forget this as we don't want your child to be on the only one
without his/her photo. In years past, the Quincy Herald Whig
has also printed the photos and bios in the paper before the day of
the race.
5. Attend a car
building clinic (if offered) so you can see what a car looks like, talk to other
racers, optimist members that are involved with the race and more.
All your questions can be answered in person at the car building
clinics. Feel free to contact us with any questions or if you
need assistance assembling your car.
6. Racers are
required to attend an inspection day. We typically have the
inspection day the week prior to race day. At the inspection,
we make sure your car is put together properly, we take the racers
photo with his car, trophies and pit crew. We cook-out and
have an overall good time getting to know you and our racers.
7. Have fun!
Don't let the unknowns get in your way of having fun. Call
Race Director Chris Huseman of
Lusage Marketing at
217.223.2661 and he will be happy to explain things further to you!
